Frequently Asked Questions
General

For starters, nobody has to pay for shipping. Shipping costs for a typical game in the US can climb upwards of $15 for a single game.

So many things can go wrong between the time a buyer pays for a game and when it arrives safely at your doorstep. Packages can get delayed, lost, damaged, and stolen. Even if everything goes smoothly, there's always a chance the contents of the box are unexpected.

When dealing in person, the time between money exchanging hands and the game arriving safely in the hands of the buyer is almost instant.

  • No more waiting for shipping.
  • No more lost boxes in transit.
  • No more typos on shipping labels.
  • No more dinged up boxes abused by handlers.
  • No more porch pirates.

Both buyer and seller have a vested interest in sealing the deal because both are required to pay the Turnip Cake fees. In other words, everyone is betting that the deal will go through.

No. The transaction for the agreed price for the games happens exclusively between the buyer and seller at the point of sale. We only handle payment of fees.

No. We provide a service introducing buyers and sellers. Buyers and sellers are responsible for the actual exchange.

Many scams involve shipping. We've removed shipping entirely. Our model should deter a lot of scammers because the deal happens in person. If buyers don't like what they see, then they don't pay and the deal is off. If sellers don't get paid, they don't part with the games. Deals happen only when everyone's terms are met. Scammers will lose time and money attempting to scam users.

It's more like a yard sale where multiple buyers negotiate what items to buy and for how much. If sellers get multiple offers for the same game, they are free to take the higher price. Ultimately it's up to the seller to choose who to sell to.
Buying

You can and should inspect the game in person before paying the buyer.

You are not forced to purchase the game. If after inspecting the game in person, you are not satisfied, then don't buy it. Sellers who list their games inaccurately risk sellers walking away, wasting their own time and money. Each failed sale reduces sellers' profits. So sellers should ensure accurate listings.

No. The price you agree to with the seller is what you will pay directly to the seller. The fee is separate and paid directly to Turnip Cake.
Selling

Payments come directly from the buyer, so you will be paid immediately at the meetup. Allow the buyer to inspect the games. Once they are satisfied, arrange payment. As soon as you confirm payment, exchange the games.

We charge a flat fee for each transaction no matter the value of the sale. So sell as much as you can to single buyers.

You must list your games individually, but you may sell multiple games to interested buyers. Whenever a buyer makes an offer for a game, they have the opportunity to browse your entire list of games for sale. If they find other games they want to buy, they can add them to the same offer and adjust the price accordingly. The fee is still the same no matter how many games are included in the offer. So sell as much as you can.

Then take the best offer. It's up to you. Sellers may see that a game has multiple offers and may want to increase their offer.
Account Security

We use a passwordless authentication policy.

The most basic method is email verification. Each email login attempt must be verified with a one-time code sent to your email.

The most secure method is passkeys, and we strongly encourage their use.

We use Stripe to handle credit card transactions for fees. We do not see nor store credit card information. Even if our database got hacked, there would be no credit card information to steal.
